What Is an Insurance Agency Network?

A plain-language explanation for independent agency owners weighing whether to join one.

An insurance agency network is a group of independent insurance agencies that pool their combined premium volume to obtain carrier appointments, higher commissions and profit sharing that no member could secure on its own — while every agency remains independently owned and operated.

How it works

How an Agency Network Operates

Individually, most independent agencies are too small to earn direct appointments with the strongest carriers. Together, they are not.

Carriers appoint agencies that can deliver meaningful premium volume and profitable business. A single small or mid-sized agency often cannot meet those thresholds on its own, which limits the markets it can offer and the compensation it can earn.

A network solves that by aggregating the premium of many member agencies under one master agreement. The carrier sees the combined book; the member agency gets the appointment, the commission schedule and the profit-sharing participation that come with it. The member still owns its clients, its staff and its brand.

What you gain

What an Agency Network Provides

  • Direct appointments with top-rated carriers, without the premium volume a carrier would normally require
  • Commission levels and profit sharing negotiated for the whole network rather than one agency
  • Growth bonuses and supplemental compensation with no minimum volume requirement
  • Access to specialty and wholesale markets for risks a single agency could not place
  • Training, marketing and agency management support
  • A contractual perpetuation plan, so the agency has a defined exit or succession path

What Joining a Network Does Not Mean

  • You do not sell your agency, and you do not give up ownership
  • You keep your own staff, your own name and your own local identity
  • You keep the book of business you wrote before joining
  • You continue to make your own decisions about how the agency is run

This is the point most agency owners want confirmed first: membership in a network is not a sale, a merger or a franchise. Ownership of the agency does not change hands.

In Mississippi

Where Mississippi Insurance Alliance Fits

MIA is the SIAA master agency for the State of Mississippi.

Mississippi Insurance Alliance (MIA) is a member of SIAA, the Strategic Insurance Agency Alliance — a national organisation writing in excess of $18.1 billion in combined premium volume across more than 5,200 independent strategic agencies. MIA holds the master agency relationship for Mississippi and works directly with agency owners across the state.

That structure means a Mississippi agency joining MIA gains national scale through SIAA while dealing locally with people in Jackson.

Quick answers

Agency Network Questions

Do I keep ownership of my agency?

Yes. Members of an insurance agency network remain independently owned. You keep your agency, your staff, your name and the book of business you wrote before joining.

Do I keep my existing carrier appointments?

Generally yes. Most members keep the direct appointments they already hold and add access to the network’s carriers on top of them.

Is there a minimum premium volume?

Not at MIA. Members earn commission and profit-sharing overrides and growth bonuses with no minimum volume requirement.

What size agency is a network for?

There is no single profile. MIA members range from small rural agencies to large multi-office operations. Captive agents, direct writers, and life and financial agencies have also joined.

How is a network different from selling my agency?

Completely. A sale transfers ownership. Network membership is a contractual relationship that leaves ownership with you and adds markets, compensation and a perpetuation plan.

What does it cost to join?

MIA discusses fees directly with each agency, because the right arrangement depends on the agency’s size and book. Several members have reported that the added markets generated enough new commission to cover the initial joining fee.
